Becoming a Priest / High School Formation

Cathedral Preparatory Seminary, Elmhurst

What is Cathedral Preparatory Seminary?

As the high school seminary of the Diocese of Brooklyn, Cathedral Preparatory Seminary provides an environment for discernment to Catholic young men with a desire to mature in their knowledge of Christ, the highest fulfillment of humanity and who are therefore willing to consider seriously the priesthood as an attractive possibility.

Cathedral Preparatory Seminary provides them with a college preparatory program, rooted in Catholic tradition, and responsive to the dynamic changes in society, in accord with the teachings of the Catholic Church. Through an integrated program of prayer, study, apostolic work and activities, the high school seminarians of the Cathedral community mature in spirit, mind and body. They are prepared for the challenges of further study, as well as to become prayerful and active adult members of their parishes, responsible citizens of their nation, and loving, concerned, generous members of society, no matter what choice they make regarding their vocations.

What is the Spiritual Formation of Cathedral Prep Seminary like?

The Cathedral Student begins his day with the celebration of the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. All students participate and get to actively participate as an altar server, sacristan, choir member, liturgical musician, lector and, if invited by the Rector and Spiritual Director as extraordinary ministers of Holy Communion. Students participate in weekly Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. We pray the Rosary together every Friday of October and participate in the Stations of the Cross during Lent. The Sacrament of Reconciliation is available at any time from the priests on the faculty and Penance services are celebrated during Lent and Advent. Students at Cathedral have overnight retreats and days of recollection at the College Seminary and other locations. Each student has a priest spiritual director with whom he meets several times a year to speak about growth in prayer and discernment. "Are you willing to say ‘Yes’?"

Fr. James Kuroly

When one lives in the seminary, one often hears “Vocation Stories” from the seminarians. They describe the way in which they “heard” and answered God’s call to the priesthood. My own vocation story is not as interesting or entertaining—some might describe it as boring—because all my life I wanted to be a priest. I never thought of, desired, or  dreamed about anything else but becoming a priest. Deep in my heart, I knew what God wanted from me and I knew that I should begin my journey towards priesthood at the High School Seminary, Cathedral Prep in Elmhurst. I told family and friends that I was going to Cathedral because of the small size, the easy travel, and the reasonable tuition, but I knew that I was going there for one reason—I wanted to be a priest...
